Startup Story of Instagram – Instagram is the world’s most popular and the most loved social media platform. This app has the most number of users in the world. It was started as a platform to share instant photos and videos with one’s friends and family. The idea of the app was to let people click photos or upload photos from their phone instantly, do a minor editing, and upload them on their feed.

They could make a profile on the app, follow their friends and see what they are up to and for the others to follow what they are upto, they had to be followed by them as well. Instagram was started in San Francisco. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are the founders of the app. It was launched in 2010. The founders were in Stanford University when they came up with the idea of Instagram. 

In the present date, there are 1 billion people on the gram. The idea of Instagram was to build the biggest app to share photos through the social media process. But, before they started with Instagram, they were working on a similar app called Burbn.

This was a similar app to Instagram that had filters to edit the pictures instantly. To start Instagram, they quit this app because of the bare necessities. By the time they decided they could start a new app, the photo sharing platform on the Internet was saturated.

An app called Scotch was doing the rounds at that time but that did not work because it had bugs and fewer editing features. This made it easier for them to start Instagram by lowering the bugs and decreasing the problems. They created a platform where the users can share their photos in just three simple steps. 

Instagram managed to get 25,000 users on the very first date which was a big deal. By March 2012, the app’s user base extended to more than 27 million.

Initially, the app was only released for iPhones and because of lower iPhones in the market and more users for the app, it created a bit of stir. Hence, the founders launched the Android version of the app soon too. When Instagram was launched for android, there were one million downloads in just one day.

The online social media platform was all set to receive an investment of $ 500 million. In April 2012, Facebook made an offer to purchase Instagram for about $ 1 billion in cash and stock, with the key provision that the company would remain independently managed. Finally, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock. 

Just after Instagram was acquired by Facebook, the app and the owners did a little change to Instagram’s user phase and made sure to stick to the simplicity of the app.
