Social media and depression – Coming straight to the point, yes, social media can cause depression issues within people. Depression is something not the same with everyone. It is an emotional or mental health related problem that can happen to anyone because of any serious issues happening in their life.

Having depression doesn’t mean a person is mentally ill but there are some emotional trauma going inside the person causing a strike on his mental health. Not two people react the same while suffering from depression.

Even if the cause of depression is the same, people can behave differently depending upon how they feel. Different people have different feelings and emotions and the way they showcase it is different too, hence depression does not come with any set of signs or symptoms. 

Depression is one of the most talked about mental health issues these days. Thanks to celebrities and people who come to speak about it in open rather than hiding it considering it being a taboo.

Apart from personal reasons, one of the major reasons for depression is social media. A study was published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology that said social media is the reason for the negative effects of humans like loneliness and depression.

“What we found overall is that if you use less social media, you are actually less depressed and less lonely, meaning that the decreased social media use is what causes that qualitative shift in your well-being,” said Jordyn Young, a co-author of the paper and a senior at the University of Pennsylvania.

This above said study included 143 students from the University of Pennsylvania and they were randomly assigned amongst two groups. One group had to continue their social media habit as they used to and one group had to limit their habits.

For three weeks, the experimental group had their social media use reduced to 30 minutes per day — 10 minutes on three different platforms which are Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. “No matter where they started off, if they were told to limit their social media, they had less depression, no matter what their initial levels were,” Young said.

The mental health issue that people get from social media is more than anxiety. It can cause impulsive disorder, serious depression, loneliness, paranoia, mental functioning, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

This is something that has been proved by the researchers in their study. In fact, researchers have also come with a concept of social media anxiety disorder which is a syndrome that is related to general social media anxiety.

It happens when people start taking social media very seriously and spend a lot of their time on social media. This syndrome affects the mental and the physical well being of the people. A person gets anxiousness, discomfort, and nervousness in different online social situations. 

Social media and depression – Millennials are greatly affected by social media pressure. Mostly teenagers and people in their 20s are most affected by social media. Social media has enough negative pressure on these people.

Some of the symptoms of depression in teenagers are low self esteem, lack of energy and fatigue, trouble in concentrating, self harm, lack of emotion, mood swings, sleeping too much or sleeping extremely little, inability to feel pleasure. 

Depressions may seem a little too much right from social media but it is for real. A lot of people in the US are suffering from serious depression from social media or Social media and depression.

The start of the social media depression is right from lack of insecurities, low self esteem, and lack of concentration in real life. A person can also get enough narcissism through social media and start getting over confident about themselves.

Social media is all about validation. We upload pictures and moments of us and our life to get validation from other people. This can get really serious. We might get some negative comments and that can hurt us bad leading to depression.

Social media and depression – There have been cases of people getting hurt because of the negative criticism that they get online. So, this can only get worse if not taken care of. 

If you observe slight changes in your behaviour pattern because of social media then you know that you must lower down the use of social media.
