Turn off ok google

Turn off ok google – Let us admit it, Ok Google or the Google assistant feature is one hell of a feature that helps us in various ways. Especially in those lazy times when we don’t want to type, OK Google comes handy. Also, on those days when the messages or the information that we want to search for, becomes easy with OK Google.

This makes our life so much easier. While we are cooking something in the kitchen and we want some help, we do not even need to reach our phone for it. We can just say OK Google and things will be done for us. We want to listen to a song at night but we don’t want to get up and reach for our phone, we can just say the OK Google command and enjoy the music.

But, one annoying thing about OK Google is that our smartphones picks up the OK Google command really fast and even responds a lot of time when we don’t even want. This is little annoying in that case. There are settings in multiple places that all seem like they should do the same thing, but don’t.

So, basically there are two primary options in which you can turn off OK Google on your device. The more obvious option doesn’t actually stop your phone from listening for commands; it only prevents it from reacting to them. The other one fully prevents your phones from listening.

It also removes the other device functionality that you might want to keep. But, let us tell you that none of these are perfect. It just depends on you and would want you to figure out what option will suit your needs.

Let us talk about the half measure. In this you can disable the Google Assistant and voice match. There are steps you can take that seem like they should make Google stop listening, but that isn’t really the case.

There are some settings in the Google app where there are options to turn off the voice match. It is a feature that will let your phone reach with OK Google commands when the screen is off. This can also be helpful to even disable the Google Assistant entirely.

For getting these options from the Google app you would have to tap the icon on the bottom row. It will be the three horizontal lines and then on the settings. Then you will have to go on to the next screen and from there, you have to hit the setting again under the Google assistant.

Now, go under the devices, down the screen, and tap the phone from there. There you will find an option that would say to turn off the access with the Voice Match. This is basically the feature that is always listening for OK Google. Once you turn off the voice match, the voice command will still work and not stop but this will only happen on your phone.

Now, if you would want to go even further in this and try out more things then you can do this. You can simply disable the Google assistant altogether. But, this one comes with a disadvantage. It will also disable accessing its functionality by any means (not just voice). So, go ahead for this if you are really sure that you would do without it.

The next option is the Nuclear option which is to deny Google microphone permission. Let us tell you that there is just one way to completely stop Google from monitoring the activities of our phones.

You will have to revoke the app’s microphone permission. What you can do for this is fire up your settings app either from the Settings icon in your app drawer or the little gear in the corner of the quick settings panel. The settings will definitely vary between the manufacturers but they are mostly similar. These instructions apply specifically to Pixel devices.

When you go there, from that spot, you have to tap Apps & notifications, then select Google. You will find this on the top of the list. If you do not find it there, you have to search for it with the magnifying glass in the corner.

After landing on the App info screen for Google, you will have to tap for permissions. Tap on the Toggle switch just next to the Microphone, then Deny anyway on the warning popup, and voilà — Google can’t hear you anymore.

But, this again comes with a couple of problems. One of them is that it is intuitive. The second one is the warning dialog that says “basic features of your device,” It could be anything like holding the like button or for activating the assistant or to tap the microphone to search by voice inside the Google app, that will not work.
