Startup Story of WhatsApp

Startup Story of WhatsApp – Whatsapp is a platform that needs no introduction today. In fact, it is impossible to find a smart phone today that has no WhatsApp installed in it. It is a messenger platform that is used to send messages to our contacts using the Internet facility.

It is the first platform that has changed the way we message people. Earlier, messaging services like SMS and MMS were popular. To send the important pictures, one used Gmail or other emailing services.

But, WhatsApp changed everything entirely. Through Whatsapp, it began to send unlimited messages to anyone, send pictures, videos, music, audio, files, documents, and almost everything through Whatsapp.

With time a lot of features changed overtime. This app allowed us to send messages via groups with different people at the same time, send broadcast messages at the same time, send voice messages, do voice calling, video calling, and a lot of good things through this app.

It has made our lives easier to be in touch with our loved ones or even our work people. To use Whatsapp, one just needs a smartphone and a good internet connection. Presently, WhatsApp is the largest messaging platform in the world.

Whatsapp is a startup of Brian Acton and Jan Koum. They were working in Yahoo and they left their jobs there to start their company. They launched WhatsApp in 2009. They left their jobs to travel around the world.

But, of course due to extensive travelling, their money was going down and for that they applied for a job at Facebook, but things didn’t go as planned. On this Jan said, “Facebook turned me down.

It was a great opportunity to connect with some fantastic people. Looking forward to life’s next adventure.” In 2009, Koum bought an iPhone and figured out that mobile applications would be the next big thing.

He thought of creating an error free and stable mobile application. After researching, he made a decision to make a messaging application free of any bugs and advertisements. He targeted mobile users as his user base.

Both of these founders said that they had worked enough of their life in selling the ads. This is what they did at Yahoo. Their working environment was as such to sell the ads.

They say that even presently, Yahoo’s home page is filled with advertisements. They also said that Yahoo declined immensely because of this and Google gained more popularity.

Their exact statement on this thing was “We wanted to spend our time building a service people wanted to use because it worked and saved them money and made their lives better in a small way.”

The owners were rejected for their jobs, were low on resources, but they had an idea in mind to move ahead with what they did and got into the success path.

The irony goes on like, once Fb rejected hiring these people and later it had to buy WhatsApp to increase its dominance because WhatsApp shared more pictures than combined Fb and Instagram.
