Startup Story of Chumbak – Chumbak is a very popular Indian lifestyle brand whose stores are there in almost all the famous Indian malls. The glittering and the happy brand that we see today started with an idea of just 2 people, Shubhra Chadda and Vivek Prabhakar.

They are a husband and wife couple duo who are the names behind Chumbak. Chumbak is the first Indian lifestyle gifting brand that started with selling souvenirs. Now, they have expanded to selling a lot more products like phone covers, utensils, notebooks, home decor, and a lot more products.

Today Chumbak has flagship stores in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai and 150 pop up stores in the rest of India. They have 70 plus stores in Japan as well. But, the brand started with just an idea of 2 people who started from their home.

Chumbak’s idea was started in 2009 and the brand officially came on the floor in 2010. In 2010, they launched their brand with 12 products.

Shubhra and Vivek went on enough foreign trips and from there they collected enough fridge magnets and souvenirs. This made Shubra realise that in India one could not find any such brand that sells such products for gifting that could also resonate with India’s vibe. There she came with an idea of creating a colourful and fun brand about which she discussed with her husband.

Her husband, Vivek liked the idea and agreed to create the brand. To start their brand and get investment, they sold their house worth Rs 45 lakhs. This is how they bootstrapped their business. From the start, they started working with vendors and sold their products through different distributor networks.

This they did for the first three of years of their business from 2010 to 2013. In 2013, they spent their first office in Bengaluru and started to expand their business in other fields.

Then they moved to selling their products through their online presence through their website. And presently as we told, they are all over the country. Their online presence is also quite strong and they have a large team and studio creating their products.

Started with bootstrapping, the brand has now raised $28,868,814 amount of funding till date from a couple of investors. As per Crunchbase, Narayan Ramachandran, Blacksoil and Gaja Capitals have invested in the business of Chumbak. 

What makes this brand different from the others is the design of the product that is totally out of the box. They are known to create fun, quirky, and colorful lifestyle products for their audience. They use the Indian prints to make their products stand out. Their theme is quite funky.

They started out with just fridge magnets and have expanded to around 400 products till date from tech accessories, to utensils, to home decor, to furniture, and lots more.

Now for a few years, they have also expanded their brand in the fashion, apparel, and footwear category for both men and women. They claim that their brand and the designs truly reflect the Indian designs.
